How to Set Up a Smart Speaker

4 minute read · 6 steps

A smart speaker can help with reminders, weather, timers, music, and even calling family — all with just your voice, no typing required. Setup only takes about ten minutes once you have the app ready.

  1. Unbox the speaker and plug it in.

Find a spot near an outlet, ideally somewhere central in your home. Wait for the light on top to turn on, which means it's powered up and ready to be set up.

  2. Download the companion app on your phone.

Amazon Echo speakers use the "Alexa" app; Google Nest speakers use the "Google Home" app. Search for the correct one in your phone's app store and download it.

  3. Create an account or sign in.

If you already have an Amazon or Google account, you can sign in with that. Otherwise, the app will walk you through creating a free account.

  4. Follow the app's steps to connect the speaker to your Wi-Fi.

The app will search for your speaker automatically and walk you through selecting your home Wi-Fi network and entering your Wi-Fi password.

  5. Test it with a simple command.

Once connected, try saying "Alexa, what's the weather?" or "Hey Google, what time is it?" depending on which device you have. If it answers, setup is complete.

  6. Try a few everyday uses.

Ask it to set a timer while cooking, play music, or remind you to take medication at a certain time. These simple, spoken commands are usually the most useful day to day.

Tip: Speak naturally and at a normal pace — you don't need to shout or speak slowly. If it doesn't understand, just try rephrasing the request in simpler words.
