How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi

Slow Wi-Fi is one of the most common — and most fixable — tech frustrations. Before assuming something is broken, try these steps in order. Most slow-Wi-Fi problems are solved by the very first one.

1. Restart your router.

   Unplug the router (the box your internet company gave you, usually with blinking lights) from the wall, wait a full 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Give it two to three minutes to fully restart. This fixes the majority of slow-internet problems and is always worth trying first.

2. Check how many devices are connected.

   If several phones, tablets, and TVs in the house are all streaming or downloading at once, it can slow things down for everyone. Ask family members to pause large downloads or video streaming if the internet feels especially slow.

3. Move closer to the router, or move the router itself.

   Walls, floors, and distance all weaken a Wi-Fi signal. If possible, place the router in a central, open location rather than a closet or corner, and away from large metal objects.

4. Close apps and browser tabs you're not using.

   Having many tabs or apps open in the background can slow down your device itself, which can feel the same as slow internet even when it isn't.

5. Check for an outage with your internet provider.

   Sometimes the problem isn't your equipment at all. Most providers (like Spectrum, Comcast, or Frontier) have a phone number or app where you can check for outages in your area.

6. Consider a Wi-Fi extender for a larger home.

   If certain rooms are consistently slow no matter what, a Wi-Fi extender (a small device that repeats the signal further into your home) can help. This is a good thing to ask us about if you're not sure which one to buy.
